Fancy Nancy ~ ~

Being a teacher, I love a good book. I read to my children a LOT. Of course, Mary Dalton gets read to more because she is now into chapter books, which take longer to read. She does not really like “picture” books anymore. She thinks that they are for babies and she would rather think up her own pictures in her head. I think that she has just figured out that they take longer to read, thus prolonging bedtime! J

One of the few picture books she still likes to read is “Fancy Nancy.” Fancy (as we call her) likes all things fancy ~ she loves to dress up and uses “fancy” words instead of “baby” words. I really like these books because of all the GREAT vocabulary words that are introduced!

Saturday night, I asked MD to “read” the book to me. The book was entitled, “Fancy Nancy’s Favorite Fancy Words From A to Z” ~ We have not read this book in quite awhile (I found it while cleaning out this week) so I was curious to see what she remembered. I will list the word, Fancy’s definition, then MD’s ~ it was pretty cute (and funny) to hear her explain these words to me!

Accessories: fancy extra stuff
“Things we put on so we look really pretty” ~ good answer!

Boa: long scarf of feathers
“That purple scarf with feathers that sheds on the floor and you get mad.”

Fiasco:a big flop, disaster
“When something is hard to do and it is going to be a lot of trouble…you know…like bathing a dog…if we had a dog…can we get a dog?”

Improvise: to use whatever is handy
“When you might have to go ask Yoohoo for some sugar” ~ pretty close, but no cigar MD!:)

And of course my girl knew “Monogram” ~ she said, “When you pay Miss Kay to put MDD on my stuff”

Parasol:an old fashioned umbrella that protects you from the sun
“Spray so poo poo does not stink.” Ha!

Understated:plain
“Opposite of not so fancy. Me and you are not understated Mama.” Thanks md!

Xenophile: person who loves foreign land and travel
She could not remember this one, so I gave her a hint and said, “You know, a person who loves ?????” She was so serious and answered, “Jesus.” J

Yearn: to want really badly
“That is when you want something ~ I yearn for an American Girl Doll.”

She nailed dapper, excursion, gorgeous, glamorous, hostess, joyous, knack, lavender (although she said it was a flavor of lotion, not a color ~ we will let that one slide!), nestle, ohh la la, queen, R.S.V.P, souvenir, tiara, vocabulary, wardrobe, zany.
She is getting so big and is so anxious to learn! We enjoy her so much and are so thankful that she is happy and healthy! There is such a joy to me watching her “learn” new things, whether it be a skill, words, song, etc. She is our little doll! :)

Too funny! MD and Jackson seem to have such fun personalities (can't imagine where they get them). I can't wait for Blair to get into Fancy Nancy - I always look at those books when we go to Target. Hope you're enjoying your summer break!
