Late Night TV ~ ~ ~

I like to think that I do not live in a "bubble" so to speak. I think that I pretty savy about things and "know" what really goes on in the world. Last night, Jackson woke up (and woke up MD) and I could not to back to sleep, so I cut on the TV. I'd like to let you in on what is on "late night" TV...don't throw stones at me...I was in SHOCK and could not believe what I was seeing.

I guess is was getting close to 11 when I started watching. On MTV there is a reality show called, "SIXTEEN AND PREGNANT." Holy cow. Are you KIDDING me? This is now something to proud of? I "think" the MTV is trying to convey the stress that 16 year old would have if she did get pregnant, but it was horrible. This show must come on every week, because next week they are having a reunion of all the girls, sort of a "where are they now." From what i could gather in my 20 mins or so of watching, each week they must show a different girl and tell her story. Some choose adoption, some kept their babies, and I hope and pray that these are the ONLY 2 choices that MTV is showing, but again....I am sure it is not. The girl last night picked adoptive parents for her baby and then had a hard time giving her up....but she did ~ to a precious Christian couple who were THRILLED. I can't imagine being that couple. There they are serving God and they did exactly what they were supposed "to do" and they cannot have their own baby, but some wild 16 year old who looked like this was NOT her first rodeo if you know what I mean, has a baby that she cannot even take care of. Again, it makes me so thankful for our 2 children. Oh yeah...this girl's labor was FOUR hours total...i was thinking that MTV should have filmed my 30 hours of labor and 3 hours of pushing to deliver MD if their "goal" is to "scare" kids ~ and if they REALLY wanted to scare them...let's show them the aftermath of delivery! ha!

THEN ~ I flipped over to HBO.....OH MY! First, I did not know that prostitution was even LEGAL ANYWHERE in the USA. I do not know the name of this show either, but it was THE MOST AWFUL THING THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. The older my children get, the more I want to cut off the cable. This show was a reality show in a house where some man runs a prostitution ring. The men come in, the girls line up...literally, shop for a woman. He picks one, they go into a bar to get to know each other, then go back to "seal the deal." One guy put $15,000 on a credit card to have sex for FIFTEEEN MINUTES. I could not stop thinking about the girls, what went wrong? How did they end up like that? Were their fathers absent? Were they abused? Did NO ONE, not even a TEACHER, notice the child and try to get them going in the rigth direction? And the men...what brings them there? Are they searching for happiness? fullfillment? peace? Wrong place fellas! We do not pay for HBO, but have it free for some reason ~ I have watched "Bee Movie" and "Horton Hears a Hoo" ~ today I gonna figure out how the remote can "skip" over this channel.

After my HBO incident, I could not sleep. Where are those girls families? WHY would they want that job? What caused them to lose self confidence and esteem? It also reminded me that while in my little "bubble" in the tiny town of Wrens, where everyone goes to church and does the "right" thing so to speak ~ They are a LOT of people who are goning to bust through the gates of hell....I think more than I realize.

Then, this morning after my LONG sleepless night, Matt Lauer did an interview on kids and cell phones. I have LOTS of experince with this teaching high school. This year I learned a new term called "sexting" ~ yeah ~ you can figure that one out! This a.m. they were discussing how some kids were getting scary texts saying that someone was going to come cut them up and their parents would find them in a bathtub of blood. REALLY!?!?! First off, the kids interviewed were TEN. I personally do not know why a 10 year old needs texting? AND even if the child DID have it, wouldn't you only allow "X" numbers in the phone and use it for emergencies only? Wouldn't you go into the child's phone and read their texts? Check their contacts? Every year, I am more amazed at how so many parents just buy things to keep their kids happy....and they become more and more less involved.

Mary Dalton asked yesterday while we were in Augusta when she could shop in "Justice." I said, "Not for awhile." She said, "Maybe when I am 12?" "Maybe," I said. I know you can find some cute things in that store, but the a lot of that stuff is way too short, tight, and looks like something a teenager would wear....a wild teenageer.

I guess I have rambled enough ~ I have got to get my house in order again! A week without air, I have let it go! :)

I came across the MTV show a few weeks ago. In the episode I saw, the girl was still dating (not the father of the child) and cheerleading while obviously showing??? What kind of guy would want to date her? Don't have HBO so can't comment on the other, but it sounds awful. During the past year I have realized the kids we teach and mentor may seem like angels, but many lead very different lives than they portray. It is very sad to find out what these kids are doing outside of school. Cell phones for kids are ridiculous. I can't imagine why they need phones. We need to go back to the good ole bag phones. No way would kids tote those dinosaurs around and no texting- only to be used in the car if there is a real emergency.

I couldn't agree with you more. If you want "good" shows on your television you should consider getting Sky Angel. We just hooked it up last night and there is absolutely NO language, no nudity, no trash!!! I will have to sacrafice some of the shows that I like to watch that were on cable, but I can sleep in peace knowing that my kids aren't watching trash.

What is Sky Angel? My kids watch PBS ~ even Disney and Nick. teach disrespect toward parents...and "Zach and cody" ~ where is there daddy? We don't EVER have the TV on night anymore if the kids are up...you cannot even watch the news.

just go to www.skyangel.com and see if that works. It's a Christian TV network. It will tell you what all the channels they have and everything. It is CHRISTIAN so like I said you don't have to worry about language or trash. Randy is the one who investigated this so he knows all about it. This is our first day to try it out. We are on a FREE 30 day trial so we can see if we like it. It is definitely GREAT for children. I don't think my older ones will be that crazy about it but we haven't really dug in it yet to see what's all out there. My kids LOVE the disney channel (and so do I, I must admit) and also PBS but you are right - their morals are all wrong. From what I've seen on Sky Angel so far on the cartoons and everything is that they teach good morals and biblical truths. As a parent you can pretty much control the TV with your small children, but let me tell you....once they get to be teenagers and stay up late and stuff.....it's BAD!!!!! In the world we live in, it can only get worse. If we decide to keep Sky Angel, I think we plan on getting an antennae to get the regular network channels PLUS we are going to get Netflex so we can be in control of the movies we watch also. My advice would be to check it out and get the 30 day FREE trial to see if you would like it. You can keep your cable at the same time also. We plan on canceling ours though if we decide to keep Sky Angel.
